As Google is increasingly focused on local search, Google My Business local optimization has become particularly important. Especially if you are a local business, service provider, or retailer with a website. As Google’s focus on local my business increases in this area, it can be assumed that the relevance of the local search will continue to grow in the future. Optimization should therefore be started as early as possible.

Why Google My Business local search?

The basic idea behind Google My Business local search is simple; more and more users are using their smartphones to surf the net. They often search for information about offers and services in the immediate vicinity. Various examples of these searches would be the nearest shoe shop, restaurant or even a pizza service. In the past, the result list was displayed according to the relevance of the existing websites, regardless of whether the service provider is in the available vicinity.

The local focus of search engine optimization is particularly useful for companies operating in the particular region. However, if you operate nationally or internationally Google My Business local search can be beneficial for your business too, as you can add and optimize your business in Google My Business listing for individual cities.

Google My Business local optimization

How does Google recognize whether a website is relevant to the local search request? Google uses the IP address of the user to identify their location and when they search for something they are shown local businesses and their offerings that service that particular location where the query was along with the organic search results. Now the question is, what can be done to bring your business on the top of the local business listing?

Onsite optimization

The basis of good Google My Business local optimization is solid basic onpage optimization of your website. This means that your website must already be known to be relevant to the service you offer. It also goes without saying that the address of your company, the business name, and of course, the telephone number must be put on the website. If you’ve got different branches, create a separate Google My Business page for each branch, as local results are presented taking the address of the business in consideration.

These are the important points to consider when placing your website on Google My Business.

  • The location of the business should be present in the URL of the website.
  • Name of the business branch should be present in the H1 heading tag.
  • Implement a crawlable store locator in the website. Don’t use JavaScript, as it can’t be read by Google.
  • Integrate Google maps on your website.

In addition to these points, it makes sense to identify the address of the individual sites, and the main office with the help of microformat or Schema.org in the source code. As a result, the local data is marked as relevant to the search engines and depending on the setup, they are also displayed in the local search results.

Local Relevance

Similar to general search engine optimization, local search results are also dependent on external references. They are called citations. Citations are mentions of the business in which in addition to postal address and name of company the telephone number, email, and website URL are used. They don’t contain the backlink to your domain however as it is considered by Google as a cross-reference. The more of these citations are there for your website, the more likely it is for the search engine to consider it as a real business.

However, there are a few things to consider when creating these citations:

  • Always use the same address in all citations.
  • Always use the same phone number. Don’t write them differently.
  • Always use the same email address and of course the same URL if a link can be created.
  • Use only high quality and authority citation websites.
