What is disavowing?
Disavowing is submitting a list of links you want Google to ignore when evaluating your site. It is done through the disavow tool in Google Search Console and is a defensive measure for neutralizing harmful, spammy or paid backlinks.
When to disavow
Disavow only when you have a clear toxic backlink problem: a manual action, a large volume of spammy links, or links from obvious link networks. Used casually, disavowing can remove legitimate signals. Google recommends trying to remove links directly before disavowing them.
How to disavow links
- Export your full backlink profile from a link tool.
- Identify toxic patterns: link farms, PBNs, paid links, irrelevant sites.
- Request removal from webmasters first.
- Upload a disavow file listing the remaining domains.
