What is a Google penalty?
A Google penalty is a negative ranking effect caused by practices that violate Google’s guidelines. There are two types: algorithmic penalties, where a ranking system (like spam or core updates) demotes your site automatically, and manual actions, where a Google reviewer explicitly applies a penalty after review.
Why penalties matter
Penalties can collapse traffic almost overnight. Common causes: purchased links, link schemes, hidden text, cloaking, thin content and scraped content. Recovery requires identifying the trigger, fixing it, and — for manual actions — filing a reconsideration request.
How to recover from a penalty
- Diagnose the cause via Search Console messages and traffic drops.
- Remove or disavow toxic links and fix the offending content.
- Clean up all violations, not just the most obvious ones.
- Request reconsideration for manual actions.
- Rebuild with white-hat SEO after recovery.
