What is Googlebot?
Googlebot is the name of Google’s web crawler software. It systematically browses the web to discover and scan pages, which then enter Google’s index. Googlebot follows links, reads robots.txt, and can render pages using a modern browser engine.
Why Googlebot matters
If Googlebot cannot reach or read your pages, they cannot rank — period. How Googlebot crawls your site (frequency, routes, rendering) directly affects indexation, crawl budget and how quickly new content appears in search.
How to work well with Googlebot
- Don’t block important pages in robots.txt.
- Keep the site fast and the server reliable.
- Submit XML sitemaps and use internal links.
- Monitor crawl stats in Search Console.
- Verify your site works without JavaScript where critical.
Googlebot and GEO
Google’s AI systems rely on the same crawled web. Content that Googlebot accesses cleanly is also more available to AI Overviews and training pipelines.
