What is the Helpful Content Update?
The Helpful Content Update (HCU) was a Google system introduced in 2022 to reward content created primarily for people and demote content created primarily to rank. It applied site-wide signals: a site with too much unhelpful content could see broad ranking declines.
Why it matters
HCU formalized what Panda started: content quality is judged at the site level, not page by page. In 2024, Google folded the system into its core ranking systems, so the principles — people-first, experience-backed, genuinely useful — now apply permanently.
What it rewards
- Content from genuine first-hand experience.
- Answers that fully satisfy the searcher.
- Original information, not rewritten competitors.
- Sites with a clear, consistent purpose.
HCU and GEO
AI engines apply similar people-first quality filters. Sites built around genuinely helpful content are exactly the sources generative engines choose to cite.
