What are the Quality Rater Guidelines?
Google’s Quality Rater Guidelines (QRG) are the publicly available instructions used by human raters to evaluate search result quality. Raters score pages on how well they fulfill the searcher’s needs — these scores help Google calibrate its ranking systems, even though raters don’t directly change rankings.
Why the guidelines matter for SEO
The QRG is the clearest public explanation of what Google considers high quality: pages that satisfy intent, demonstrate expertise and trust (E-E-A-T), and are accurate and useful. Aligning content with the guidelines is the safest way to build durable rankings.
Key concepts in the guidelines
- Needs met: does the page fully satisfy the query?
- E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust.
- YMYL: your money or your life topics need extra care.
- Page quality vs content quality assessment.
Guidelines and GEO
AI engines enforce the same quality ideals. Content that a human rater would score highly is also content AI systems choose to cite.
