What is duplicate content?
Duplicate content is substantially similar text appearing on more than one URL — either within your own site (internal) or across different domains (external). Search engines must decide which version is the original, and when they can’t, rankings suffer.
Why duplicate content matters
Duplicates dilute ranking signals: links and authority get split across copies instead of consolidating on one page. Common causes include URL parameters, printer versions, product variations and syndicated content.
How to fix duplicate content
- Use canonical tags to point duplicates at the original.
- Set up 301 redirects for merged or moved pages.
- Eliminate parameter-generated duplicates.
- Publish unique content for each page — no copy-paste.
- Use noindex for pages that should not rank at all.
