What is a redirect chain?
A redirect chain is a sequence of redirects: URL A redirects to URL B, which redirects to URL C, and so on, before reaching the final page. Chains often build up over time as sites restructure and old redirects are forgotten.
Why redirect chains matter
Every hop in a chain adds latency and, historically, dilutes link equity. Search engines must follow each redirect, wasting crawl budget and slowing indexation of the final page. Clean, direct redirects are far better for SEO.
How to fix redirect chains
- Audit redirects with a crawler to find chains.
- Replace each chain with a single direct 301.
- Check for loops and circular redirects.
- Update internal links to the final URL directly.
