What is search intent?
Search intent is the reason behind a search query — what the user wants to achieve. It is usually classified into four types: informational (learn something), navigational (find a site), commercial (compare options) and transactional (buy or act).
Why search intent matters
Matching intent is the foundation of ranking. A page that answers a question will never rank for a ‘buy now’ query, no matter how well optimized. Search engines measure intent match above nearly everything else.
The four types of search intent
- Informational: ‘how does SEO work?’
- Navigational: ‘search engine optimization wikipedia’.
- Commercial: ‘best SEO agency for small business’.
- Transactional: ‘buy SEO audit service’.
Search intent and GEO
AI engines are intent machines — they answer the user’s goal directly. Content that precisely matches intent is the content AI systems choose to cite.
