What is Time to First Byte?
Time to First Byte (TTFB) is the time between a browser requesting a page and receiving the first byte of data from the server. It measures server responsiveness — including DNS, connection and server processing time.
Why TTFB matters
A slow TTFB delays everything that follows, including LCP and Core Web Vitals. It is not a standalone ranking factor, but it caps your ability to achieve good performance scores.
How to improve TTFB
- Use fast, well-configured hosting.
- Enable caching at server and CDN levels.
- Optimize database queries and plugins.
- Use a CDN to shorten geographic distance.
Target
Good TTFB is generally under 600 ms; under 200 ms is excellent. Measure with WebPageTest or your host’s diagnostics.
